What is Notes from the Underground? That is a question that has been plaguing philosophers throughout the centuries, often with startling results. Socrates defined it as a strange place where the normal rules of virtue and beauty didn’t completely apply. Nietzsche on the other hand defined it as the state of mind that comes somewhere in between the Eternal recurrence and the Revaluation of all values, probably meaning indigestion.
With Ireland only a short hop across the Irish Sea and sharing the same language, you might think there would be few adjustments to be made by anyone moving from Ireland to the UK.
In this episode of Culture Shock, we find out that this is not the case when we explore the experiences of the Irish Community living in Hammersmith and Fulham. Guests on the show are Bernard Canavan, Irish artist and teacher, and Catherina Casey, General Manager of the Irish Culture Center in Hammersmith.

Stories are all around us, everywhere we look. Everyone has a tale to tell, and storytelling is how we learn about life and history. Sharing stories with children is a vital to their development and understanding of the world, whether through books, performance or spoken word. Each week in Fables, a different narrator reads and brings to life a story for parents and children to listen to together.

My love of music came from going to small shows in my home town of Watford when I was 14. Every Friday was a chance to see unsigned and sometimes signed bands at Watford Rugby Club. This was when I realised that playing music and being on stage was something that I needed to do. This inspired me to pick up the bass guitar and start jamming with some friends in the hope to make it as a rock star!
Culture Shock explores what life is like for some of the different communities living in Hammersmith and Fulham. Each week presenter Henri or Sebastian invite representatives from a different community to come on the show and share their personal experiences of the phenomenon we call culture shock. Guests discuss the difficulties they have faced in adapting to London life, from language barriers to ticket barriers, and offer their own advice to listeners in similar situations. Irish, Italian, Polish and South Asian communities are among those Henri or Sebastian speak to. They hope that the programme will encourage listeners to step outside their own cultures and explore others around them.
